RETIREMENT-HOME CHECKLIST

Plan for the life you may live later

A future home should remain practical when routines, mobility and support needs change.

Separate the home from the immigration plan

A property purchase and a right to reside are different matters. Before relying on the home for retirement, confirm the current visa or residency route, renewal conditions, healthcare implications and how much time you may legally spend in Malaysia.

Look at daily mobility

Inspect lift access, step-free routes, bathroom layouts, floor transitions, lighting, distance to transport and how groceries reach the unit. Consider whether the home remains manageable if driving becomes less attractive later.

Build a healthcare and support plan

Map the clinics, hospitals, pharmacies and emergency contacts you would realistically use, then verify access and insurance arrangements. Think about how family members would reach you and who could help with the home during illness or travel.

Choose adaptable space

A flexible room can serve as a study, caregiver room or family guest room. Prioritise circulation, storage and usable bathrooms over decorative features. Compare the actual unit rather than assuming every layout in a development has the same practicality.

Stress-test long-term ownership

Allow for maintenance increases, major repairs, currency movement, furnishing replacement and eventual resale costs. Ask who the likely future buyer would be and how easily the property could be managed or sold if plans change.

Make the route and the home real

Shortlist suitable layouts, inspect the actual view and experience the CIQ journey before deciding.
